In the spring of 2004 Chief Donny Morris of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug(K.I.) (formerly Big Trout Lake First Nation) contacted the Department of Anthropology, Lakehead University (LU) regarding human remains discovered on the shores of Big Trout Lake in northern Ontario.

The remains and nearby archaeological specimens were analyzed by Drs. Scott Hamilton and El Molto prior to reburial in the spring of 2005. An AMS radiocarbon date of 4450±50 yBP (TO-11878) was generated from human bone (calibration to between 5100 and 5300 years ago). Ongoing analysis is addressing the physical character and health profile of this individual, and also how burials from Big Trout Lake and the nearby Wapekeka First Nation contribute to the early to mid Holocene history of far northern Ontario.
